What is it?
It is an output device that produces sounds generated by your computer. They can be built in monitors and all in one PCs. They mainly come in the following configurations:

Comprised of 2 tweeters only. Capable of stereo sound.

Comprised of 2 tweeters and 1 subwoofer. Capable of stereo sound. Can output much better bass than 2.0.

5.1
Comprised of 5 tweeters and 1 subwoofer. Capable of Surround sound.

7.1
Comprised of 7 tweeters and 1 subwoofer. Capable of Surround sound.
How does it work?
Speakers work by doing the following (over simplified) steps:

Sound Quality
Make sure they sound good to you
Good sound can be subjective. It is highly recommended that you try the speakers out before purchasing if possible.

Compatibility
Check compatibility with your computer audio ports

Bluetooth
Check if it can support output through Bluetooth
Many new devices are removing the Audio Jack in exchange of providing audio through Bluetooth. Having your speakers support Bluetooth is convenient.

Make sure you have enough space

Placement
Make sure they are properly placed on your desk

Surround Sound
If you have the space, get 5.1 setup for immersive sound
2.0 is Stereo without subwoofer. 2.1 is Stereo with subwoofer. 5.1 is Surround with subwoofer.

Remote Control
Check if there is a remote control.
Avoid

Bluetooth
Avoid using Bluetooth as the main connection
Bluetooth has lower quality audio and is prone to interference. This can cause your audio to stutter.
