What is it?
The act of upgrading your PC parts with newer ones to take advantage of newer features and/or more performance. Upgrading can extend the life of your PC considerably and help save costs. Here are the main parts that can be upgraded in desktop PCs with their easiness level out of 5 (5 is easiest):

CPU
The CPU can be upgraded as long as it is still compatible with the Motherboard. Make sure to reapply the thermal paste properly when swapped.

CPU Cooler
Usually not necessary to upgrade, unless the newer CPU consumes considerably more power.

Storage
Storage is easy to upgrade. Make sure you have the same interface and backup your data before upgrading.

Network Card
Network Cards are very easy to upgrade. Can be added in PCIe slots.

Motherboard
Motherboards are difficult to upgrade. Usually upgraded with the CPU for compatibility.

Ports
Ports are very easy to upgrade. Can be added in PCIe slots. Upgrading Motherboards usually comes with newer ports.

Power Supply
Power Supplies are difficult to upgrade. Almost never upgraded, unless newer parts need more power than the Power Supply can provide.
